“But Exercise Is Torture!”

Everyone knows that exercise is good for you, right? Exercise is what you need to do to get into shape, to be healthy. This is common knowledge. Exercise is what you really should be doing—but it’s torture!

Exercise that’s considered torture is not sustainable as a part of everyday life! What if instead of seeing exercise as being what you should do, you recognize that movement is what your body was made to do?

Your body is comprised of marvelous mechanisms that enable movement—muscles, blood vessels that take oxygen to those muscles, bone and joints that can even ache when not moved often enough, and organs that serve as the battery, engine, and exhaust system of the amazing machine your body is. Even if you have disabilities or a motion-limiting disease, there is always some part of your body in motion at all times.

So let’s not crack the whip and torture ourselves. Let’s turn to the One who so fearfully and wonderfully made us and ask Him to direct us to those forms of motion that are natural, joyful, energizing, and spring from delighting in the grace God has given.

In my next blog, we’ll look at more practical considerations for when and how to let movement flow in our everyday lives.
